Safe Motherhood Campaign in Balochistan
Balochistan experiences most number of maternal deaths: 856 maternal maternal deaths per 100, 000 live births. For this very reason WPF, Pakistan is focusing more on Balochistan in its Safe Motherhood campaign. As part of this initiative, a meeting was held with 20 different civil society organizations of Balochistan during which WPF briefed them on maternal mortality situation in the province. Consequently all participants agreed on formulating a support group for this cause.
Moreover, with the firm support of Dr. Ruqaiya Saeed Hashmi WPF, Pakistan organized a Forum with 12 provincial ministers and Members of Provincial Assembly (MPA) on 12 May, 2010. The Forum resolved to draft a resolution on reducing MMR for tabling in next Assembly session. Prior to this meeting 37 MPAs and ministers took part in the signature campaign of WPF, Pakistan by signing the petition that demands to make motherhood safer for all women in Pakistan.

WPF Launches its Safe Motherhood Activities in 16 Districts of Sindh
World Population Foundation (WPF), Pakistan along with local partner, Health and Nutrition Development Society (HANDS) has taken its Safe Motherhood campaign to 16 districts of Sindh. The target districts include, Thatta, Badin, Hyderabad, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Matiari, Sanghar, Umarkot, Dadu, Sukkhur, Shikarpur, Qambar, Shahdadpur, Jacobabad, Kashmore and Karachi.
The focus of the campaign is to draw the attention of policy makers as well as general community to the issues of Safe Motherhood and particularly on the Human Rights Council’s resolution on ‘Preventable Maternal mortality and morbidity and human rights”.
The activities which will continue from 27th July to 2nd August, 2010 will include awareness raising seminars with all key stakeholders in the target districts. Moreover, corners will also be set up across all districts to gather support for the e-petition that has been launched for the implementation of the UN resolution on Maternal Mortality and Human Rights.
